New Emergency Medicine Docs Participate In Joint Exercise

"I think it is important to give newly graduated military doctors the opportunity to understand how care is provided during deployments and in combat from the point of harm, to strengthen the ability to recover and before surgery . don't come there," said Dr. Paul Allen. assistant professor, Department of Emergency Medicine, University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio.

Allen is a former special forces medic who returns every year to help with the exercise. Some volunteers travel to San Antonio to help with their expenses. "Newly graduated local doctors are exposed to how health care is delivered in the best setting - the hospital," said Allen. "Taking an important step in how to apply concepts and methods of patient care from the hospital environment to the pre-hospital, complex environment should not be a journey of discovery or trial and error."

"We have a valuable pool of combat medic experience in our seniors and new retirees here in San Antonio, who can help shorten the learning curve for these new students," he said. add. "That, in turn, can translate into saving the lives of new Soldiers, Airmen and Marines."

The exercise began by focusing on the danger and importance of internal medicine care in difficult situations, explained Maj. (Dr.) John Knight, JEMX BAMC project officer.

"JEMX is an important resource for our graduate students," Cole said. "It's an opportunity to focus their skills on the workplace they may find themselves in soon. It's invaluable training that gives them success as they prepare to practice medicine in challenging environments."
