Oshkosh has already built about 14,000 JLTVs for the U.S. military, according to the company, but is eyeing a larger contract that the Army is preparing to compete for by the end of next year.

Under the new task order, the company will also build 868 packaged and installed accessory trailers and kits. The order also includes 125 vehicles assigned to allies and partners, including Brazil, Lithuania, Montenegro and Slovenia.

"The combined lethality of a lightweight and protected vehicle like the Oshkosh JLTV quickly fills capability gaps faced by many international militaries," said John Lazar, vice president and general manager of international programs for Oshkosh Defense. Oshkosh won the JLTV contract in 2015, beating out AM General and Lockheed Martin. But the Army is preparing a new contract for the vehicle, with a new award expected in the fourth quarter of 2022.

According to industry day slides released earlier this month, that contract is expected to be worth $6.5 billion and include about 17,000 JLTVs and 10,000 trailers. Oshkosh expects the bid to be competitive given the number of vehicles it has built to date and its position as the contract holder.

The joint service nature of the effort is guaranteed by congressional language in the Fiscal Year 2006 (FY06) Authorization Act, which mandates that the future tactical wheeled vehicle program be a joint program.
